The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed this week on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
